Agent languages

All Watermelon Agents automatically recognize the language someone is speaking and adapt immediately. By default, the Agent responds in the same language, without extra instructions. Watermelon Agents know over 100 languages, so all chats can be handled in the language of your end user.

Best multilingual language model

The AI models GPT-4.1 and GPT5 respond best to instructions regarding language.

Training your Agent on languages

Tips for consistent language use

  • Consistent language for instructions: Try to keep your Instructions and Domain knowledge in one language (rather than mixing languages) for better consistency of the response.
You can add your instructions in any language you’d like. Keep in mind that English is the best trained language in the language model. Less represented languages might have less training data which result in less polished results.
  • Add extra instructions: If the Domain knowledge is written in any other language than English, the Agent might default back to that language. Add the following instruction in the Domain knowledge to ensure the AI Agent always responds in the correct language.
Unless the input is clearly in English, assume it is Dutch and respond in Dutch. You should not switch languages in the middle of a conversation. Even if the user shares their address, mentions a country, or includes something in a different language (Dutch or English), always stick to the language in which the conversation started.

Restricting the Agent to specific languages

If you want to limit your Agent so it only speaks in a specific language. Add an instruction for this in the Domain knowledge and your Agent will do so.
You only speak English, if a user addresses you in a different language, respond with: ‘I can only speak English, how can I help you.‘

One Agent for a multilingual website

You can use one Agent for a website with multiple languages. The AI Agent cannot detect which domain it is being used on. If your website serves multiple countries that speak the same language (e.g., Belgium and the Netherlands), configure the Agent to ask users from which country they are. Take the following into consideration when doing this:
  • Multiple Chat Widgets: We advise configuring multiple Chat Widgets, one for each language. This way, the user is addressed directly in their own language.
  • Extra instruction for sharing URL’s: It is needed to add an extra instruction, so the Agent knows which URL’s to share for each language:
If you are addressed in French, only share links ending in .fr. For example, share www.mywebsite. fr/products instead of the English version.
    Example:
User: Quels sont les prix des abonnements?
Assistant: Vous pouvez consulter les prix des abonnements ici : www.mywebsite. fr/abonnements.
